PERFECTION OF THE HUMAN TOUCH

Simplicity. Harmony between aesthetics and functionality. Attention to even the smallest detail. These are the characteristics that define the work of a Takumi master craftsman. Using their hands, these artisans always infuse a bit of themselves into their work, creating objects that radiate warmth, that have a heart and soul.

The resulting masterpieces are not merely beautiful – they are very nearly perfect. Perfection, in this sense, is not surface level. It goes deep. No matter where you direct your attention, every last thread, every blot of ink, is exactly how it should be, while still showing the human touch of the person who created it. The philosophy and processes behind this idea of Takumi mastery are deeply engrained in the Mazda DNA. To bring them to life, we turned to a veritable Takumi in his own field: Ole Bielfeldt, the artist behind “Macrofying”.

Attention to detail – microscopic detail, in fact – are essential to Macrofying’s work as much as they are to Mazda’s. For his millions of followers on TikTok and YouTube, the 22-year-old German macro photographer and filmmaker creates mesmerizing zoom-in videos that find beauty in mundane things, from a kernel of salt to a drop of perfume hitting human skin.

The simplicity and purity of his work are perfectly aligned with the Japanese design aesthetic at Mazda. “There is a similar passion in the way we work,” notes Macrofying. “We both focus on detail and like to explore different worlds.” For this collaboration, Macrofying fully immerses himself in the world of carmaking at Mazda.

MASTERY, MAGNIFIED

From the first sketch to the last finishing touch, from the choice of materials to the delicate manual stitching on our dashboard, the Mazda x Macrofying collaboration under the headline “details make perfection” tells the story of a Mazda car, from its beginnings in the Takumi's studio to its technical realization. What gives Mazda’s Soul Red Crystal its unique depth and glow? How are artisans at Mazda shaping clay models by hand?

Looking at materials and processes at a microscopic level, Macrofying's work encourages a new appreciation for the mastery and unwavering precision required to create beauty of the highest calibre. More than ever, the resulting video highlights the special kind of perfection that comes from incorporating the human touch – not sterile and cold, but full of warmth and character.

PERFECTION BEHIND THE MACRO LENS

For those wanting to know more about the people and ideas behind the collaboration, a special “Behind the Scenes” video provides valuable insights. The video allows the viewer a glimpse into how the magic of Macrofying’s work is created – an elaborate process that requires the same perfectionism shown by our Takumi craftsmen. “Macrofying’s work is astonishing and highly interesting because he dives in so deep into the details.”, agrees Mazda Designer Bahram Partaw.

This idea of chasing perfection to its very limits unites the aesthetic expression of Mazda and Macrofying. Nowhere does this become more apparent than in this look behind the curtain. Taken together, these stunning videos not only deepen your understanding for the hard work and dedication that goes into creating something beautiful. They also perfectly express the essence that makes our cars what they are: masterpieces, Crafted in Japan.

On first impressions, it would be remiss to compare a suspension bushing — each individual piece no wider than five inches across — with a pair of chopsticks. There is, however, more of a common ground between the two than you may realise. As Mazda’s Yasuyoshi Mushitani explains, there is far more to suspension bushing than meets the eye...
