1967
birth of the rotary engine
In 1967, we finally managed to make the breakthrough and delivered what is now considered a classic, the iconic rotary-powered Cosmo sports car. The Cosmo opened a new chapter of automobile history and is considered a symbol of the Mazda Spirit of tirelessly overcoming challenges. When the president of Mazda, Tsuneji Matsuda, drove the prototype into the Tokyo Motor Show in 1963 it caused quite a stir. It was a car that clearly deserved the praise it received – “More like flying than driving.”
